1. The St. George Marathon
The St. George Marathon is an annual marathon running event that first took place in November of 1977. It was originated and organized by Sherm Miller, who worked for the Parks and Recreation Department of St. George City. The race is now hosted by the city on the first Saturday in October. The event has gained popularity over the past several years, and is now the 13th largest annual marathon in the United States with up to 7,400 participants. Even if you aren’t running in the marathon, it is an amazing event to attend!
2. Ironman World Championship
This athletic event not only attracts visitors from across the United States, but from the entire world! The Ironman World Championship allows some of the top professional triathletes to test their mettle in the shadows of the stunning red rock canyons of St. George. While the course is challenging, it is also one of the most rewarding because of the difficulty and stunning views. The swimming portion of the event takes place at the scenic Sand Hollow State Park in the Sand Hollow Reservoir and covers 1.3 miles. Next, competitors are tasked with a 56 mile bike course that travels through the rolling hills of Snow Canyon State Park. Finally, athletes finish off the competition with a 13.1 mile run up the Red Hills Parkway through the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve. If you’ve never witnessed this race before or visited Ironman Village, it’s a must while in St. George!
3. St. George Area Parade of Homes
The St. George Area Parade of Homes is not your typical parade. It is the largest parade in the state and features over 30 new homes every year. This event has a long-standing tradition of displaying a variety of custom homes by different builders and introducing exciting new trends to attendees from across the state and country. You’ll love the opportunity to walk through each room in these stunning properties and enjoy the breathtaking landscapes of southern Utah, which just adds to the incredible design and layout of the homes themselves.
4. Huntsman World Senior Games
Each October, the Huntsman World Senior Games returns and is one of the most successful events in St. George, Utah. The games began in 1987 with the vision to create an international sports event for men and women ages 50 and better. The founders agreed that the golden years were better when good health and a physical lifestyle became a way of life. Today, a small full-time staff works year round and are joined by 2,500 volunteers to host 30 athletic events in St. George over a two week stretch in October. Some of the events include archery, bowling, cycling, golf, horseshoes, and pickleball.
